Teachers

Elle & Asael

Elle
Hailing from Australia and now Berlin-based, Elle has been exploring dance from an early age, dabbling in various styles. However, discovering Lindy Hop and Authentic Jazz was when she felt most inspired, especially drawn to the conversational nature of jazz and the freedom it offers. In Berlin, Elle runs Jam Haus, a dance project primarily focused on authentic jazz as well as bridging jazz to other dance communities. She finds a lot of joy investing time in her community, regularly collaborating with local schools and cultural events, bringing people from diverse backgrounds together.

Asael
Originally from Mexico and now based in Berlin, Asael draws inspiration from self-expression, shared spaces, and storytelling through movement, which have fueled his dedication to exploring this African American art form over the years. He has a deep love for rhythms, and his passion for learning about Jazz culture and values has also inspired him to explore his own roots further, preserving Latin American influences in his art while uncovering their connections to Jazz.

Aiala & Gurutz

Aiala & Gurutz are Lindy Hop and Authentic Jazz dancers from Vitoria-Gasteiz, the city where their swing journey began. In 2017 they moved to Madrid, where they currently run La Demo Swing Lab, a space where they teach, research and share their passion and deep respect for this culture.

In their classes, rhythm and music are the common thread of everything they do, as they consider them the fundamental pillars of swing. For them, dance is a continuous learning process: a constant quest to keep growing and exploring both as dancers and as teachers.

Levels

This is our definition of the 4 main dance levels. In the registration form we will also include combinations of these levels — if you feel you're between two, select the combination of both.

The number of class groups will not depend on the classification of these levels but on the number of registrations (signing up for a level does not guarantee that an exact class group for that level will exist, but we will try to keep it within the range you selected).

Beginner

You've started relatively recently and mainly know the basics with triples, perhaps you're starting or about to start working on kicks. You're beginning to experience social dancing but still feel a bit intimidated and want to learn more moves to improvise and enjoy social dances.

Intermediate

You know all the basic steps of Lindy Hop (triples, kicks & groove walks), alternate between 6 and 8 count structures and manage to incorporate them into your social dancing. You know and practice the Swing Out, Texas Tommy and Tandem among other moves. Additionally, basic musicality concepts resonate with you, allowing you to respect the music's breaks when you dance. You hope to improve both in technique and communication, as well as adapting your movements to the rhythm and music.

In Solo Jazz you know basic routines like the Shim Sham, and you may have explored basic improvisation. You can comfortably dance steps starting on the 1 and on the 8 at medium tempos.

Advanced

You have internalized the essence of Lindy Hop, and have basic knowledge of musicality, footwork and other technical aspects. You feel comfortable doing Swing Out variations at different tempos, and moves like the Sugar Push are no longer a mystery to you. You know how to play with rhythmics, syncopation and other advanced musicality elements, and can easily memorize step structures and choreographies. You feel comfortable at any tempo and can do swing outs and other figures at fast tempos.

In Solo Jazz you may know choreographies like the Tranky Doo or the St. Louis Shim Sham and have experience improvising at different tempos and structures of swing and blues.

Masters

(This is the highest level of the festival and we want to ensure we offer the best environment and the highest standards. Please, before registering, ask yourself if this is really your level)

You can't imagine your life without dancing. You've been dancing at an advanced level for a long time, have participated in national and international festivals, and may have competed. Perhaps you teach classes in your local scene or internationally. You want to focus on movement quality and improvisation, as well as improving your musicality and communication skills. You're also likely interested in teaching and/or competing and want to gain knowledge for that.

In Solo Jazz you know all the classic choreographies including the Big Apple, Mama's Stew or Trickeration. You feel comfortable improvising at all tempos and structures.
